The medical staff includes nearly 300 physicians representing more than 40 medical and surgical specialties.Under the administrative and clinical supervision of the Head Nurse, the Mental Health Technician maintains a safe and therapeutic environment; provides direct psychosocial and physical nursing care to assigned adult patients, in both individual and group settings; and implements the program schedule according to the patients individual treatment plan.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESMaintain a safe and secure therapeutic environment by assessing potential hazards on the units; complete environmental security checks, as assigned, checking for potentially dangerous articles in the patients possession and confiscating contraband articles; keep Charge Nurse informed of safety problems and action taken.Initiate, maintain and terminate therapeutic interactions with patients and family members, following the treatment plan guidelines.Elicit information at the time of admission from the patient, family members, or other sources about the patients moods, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and other pertinent factors.Possess knowledge of growth and development specific to the patient population and understand the range of treatment needed by specific patient population.Observe, interpret, and report changes in the patients moods, thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and responses to planned treatment interventions; provide timely verbal feedback to Charge Nurse regarding any change in the patients clinical condition.Use therapeutic communication skills including offering support, encouragement, positive reinforcement, clarification, reality orientation, de-escalation, redirection, teaching and problem solving; lead or co-lead structured group activities, as assigned.Observe for knowledge deficits to evaluate teaching needs; perform patient teaching on an individual and group basis.Provide direct physical care, as required, including baths, showers and personal grooming; take vital signs including blood pressures and weights.Monitor patients nutritional status, observes patients eating, assist in completing calorie counts and selecting special diets.Monitor patients sleep patterns and assist patient in relaxation techniques.Provide one-to-one supervision of any patient on suicide precautions, in seclusion and/or restraints, as assigned.Participate in hospital emergency codes; responds to unpredictable clinical situations with interventions ranging from de-escalation to physically restraining or isolating patients who may be aggressive, combative or out of control; follow directions of Clinical Leader.SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIESComplete in a timely and legible manner narrative notes and various clinical forms for the patient record such as the Admission Data Base, Special Treatment Flow Sheets, Calorie Counts, Teaching Logs, Vital Sign Sheets, Pass Forms, Point Sheets Intake and Output Forms, Sleep Charts, and Security Checks.Drive hospital vehicles; provides for the safety and security of patients while in transit.Serve as a role model for patients by demonstrating appropriate social skills and self-respect through language, attire and behaviors.Safeguard patient valuables.Participate in program activities including treatment team meetings.Provide clinical coverage throughout the department, as assigned.Receive and handles telephone communications in a professional and business-like manner.Participate in the development and attainment of program goals and objectives.Attend departmental meetings and in-services as well as mandatory in-services and participates in Continuous Quality Improvement.Perform additional duties as assigned.MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USEDGeneral Office Supplies and EquipmentPersonal ComputerWORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSSome standing or walking; handling light to moderate weights (5 to 20 lbs.).
